This calculator determines the approximate Basal Metabolic Rate of a
human body at rest. This is an approximation and will slightly vary
depending on the amount of lean mass of the body. This calculator will
underestimate the metabolic rate for an extremely lean body and will
over-estimate the metabolic rate of an extremely obese body:
What is the Metabolic Rate?
The Metabolic Rate is the amount of energy used by a body. Find the
BMR for a male with this Basal Metabolic Rate Formula:
Male BMR = 66 + (6.23 x weight) + (12.7 x height) - (6.8 x age)
Example: The BMR of a male that is 32 years old, 70 inches tall,
and weighs 180 lbs is:
BMR = 66 + (6.23 x 180) + (12.7 x 70) - (6.8 x 32)
Calculated out this gives an approximate BMR of 1859.
Using the BMR, you can further calculate the daily caloric needs
using the Harris-Benedict Equation:
